Food Contact Testing

Standard IS 9845:1998 · Overall migration

Determination of the overall migration of constituents from plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

Food products on a packing line

How the Test Works

The plastic packaging is exposed to the appropriate food simulant under specified time and temperature conditions. The substances that migrate into the simulant are then determined, generally by gravimetric analysis.

Step 1

Choose the simulant

The simulant is selected to match the type of food the packaging will hold.

Step 2

Expose under set conditions

Time and temperature are chosen to match how the packaging will be used.

Step 3

Measure the migration

Overall migration is generally expressed as mg/dm² of food-contact surface.

Food Simulants

The simulant is chosen according to the type of food the packaging will hold.

ADistilled water
B3% acetic acid
C10% ethanol
C50% ethanol
Dn-Heptane
EOlive oil or a suitable fat simulant

Key point. IS 9845:1998 is the overall migration test for plastic food-contact materials.

Important Considerations

A migration result is only meaningful when the test reflects how the packaging is really used.

  • The simulant depends on the type of food.
  • Time and temperature depend on the intended use.
  • The test should represent the actual food-contact application.
  • Colour migration may also be assessed.

Applicable Materials

The test applies to plastic packaging that comes into direct contact with food.

  • Plastic films
  • Pouches
  • Laminates
  • Containers
  • Bottles
  • Closures
  • Other plastic food-contact articles

Request Food Contact Testing

Tell us the material, the food it will hold and how it will be stored. We will recommend the simulant and test conditions.
